US President Donald Trump calls for a ‘good shutdown’ to deal with US ‘mess’

US President Donald Trump has called for a “good shutdown” of the country to deal with the “mess.”

The new president appeared on Twitter on Tuesday to make the comments in the wake of his failure to move forward with his agenda in the spending deal, US Congress is set to approve this week.

“The reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there!”

The spending bill, which in part, excludes provisions for Trump’s proposed wall on the Mexican border, is the first major bipartisan legislation during Trump’s tenure.

The president suggested that “We either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good ‘shutdown’ in September to fix mess!”

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney (pictured below) defended the threat of a shutdown, saying, “The president’s tweet was that we might need a shutdown at some point to drive home that this place — that Washington needs to be fixed…  I think that's a defensible position, one we'll deal with in September.”

Both Republicans and Democrats are claiming victory for the battles surrounding the bill.

“They wanted a shutdown. They wanted to try and make this president look like he could not govern," Mulvaney said. "They wanted to make this president look like he did not know what he was doing. And he beat them on that at the very, very highest level… They were desperate to show that we were not reasonable and we completely destroyed that narrative by negotiating this deal.”

According to the Hill, several media accounts have suggested that Trump and the White House were losers in the negotiations over the deal.

Approval of the spending bill to fund the government through September will spare Trump a harmful government shutdown.
