Security staff at the airport in the Spanish city of Barcelona will be going on strike to demand a pay increase.
Approximately 350 security workers, who are tasked with checking passengers’ baggage, say they will stage four one-hour walkouts on Friday and Sunday, followed by a 24-hour stoppage on Monday.
The partial strikes would cause delays for passengers at the airport, which is one of the busiest in Europe.
Similar industrial action has been taken since last weekend.
It continued after a salary increase of 200 euros ($235) a month, negotiated by the regional Catalan government and the security staff from Eulen firm — which operates scanners, controls lines, and searches passengers — was rejected by a majority of the workers on Thursday.
Meanwhile, passengers flying from Barcelona have had to wait in long lines and put up with delays of several hours to reach the boarding area in recent weeks because of the labor dispute, which comes in the busy summer period.
Strike leaders say the long lines strengthened their bargaining position.
“If there are no queues, everything is lost. If there are queues, everything is won. It’s that simple,” one of the leaders of the strikes, Genoveva Sierra, explained to her colleagues in a recording obtained by Spanish media.
“The media, the passengers and Aena (the Spanish airports authority) only care about the queues,” said Sierra.
One British holidaymaker described the situation at the airport last week as “security mayhem.”
If the talks fail, the regional government says it will bring in the Civil Guards to end the situation.
