US President Donald Trump retweeted the image of a train with the president’s name on it running over the CNN logo, but quickly deleted it after the meme sparked blacklash.
Trump retweeted the cartoon image posted by a supporter who added, “Nothing can stop the #Trump Train!!," It was shared more than 2,000 times in less than two hours before it was removed.
The tweet came days after the Charlottesville violence last week, in which a woman was run over and killed by a car that rammed into a group of counter-protesters at a rally organized by white supremacists, Ku Klux Klan, and neo-Nazis.
The original image has a donkey, the Democratic Party's symbol, instead of the CNN logo, but someone changed the meme to include the CNN logo.
One White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, the retweet “was inadvertently posted and as soon it was noticed it was immediately deleted."
Trump has been criticized since Saturday's violence in Charlottesville for blaming both sides in the bloody rally and failing to condemn white supremacists and other extreme groups.
The president finally condemned white supremacists Monday, only to cause another firestorm by defending his original statement on Tuesday.
Trump previously caused controversy for retweeting an edited video of himself repeatedly punching a figure with the CNN logo over its face.
The president’s tweet of that video was a continuation of his attacks on the press, which he has regularly dismissed as the “fake news” media.
He has previously criticized other major US media outlets including ABC, The New York Times and The Washington Post.
