US Vice President Mike pence says he is “not aware” of any collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign and the Russian government, noting that the White House was going to fully cooperate with investigations in this regard.
"During all of my experience on the campaign, I never witnessed any evidence of collusion or any of the allegations, I'm not aware of that ever having occurred," Pence told reporters Monday, as he visited the Christian mission in Colombia’s Cartagena.
Pence denied allegations that the president was reluctant in cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s high-profile investigation into his campaign’s possible ties to Russia during the 2016 race.
"We'll continue to fully cooperate with the special counsel, we'll provide them with whatever information they require and we'll stay completely focused on the task at hand."
The comments followed reports that Mueller had issued interview requests to many Trump associates, including West Wing officials involved in the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, the meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the annual G20 summit, as well as the firing of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
Trump fired Flynn in April, after it turned out that he had “misled” Pence about his past meetings with Russian officials. Pence came under fire back then for going on live TV and defending the former general against the accusations.
The vice president brought up Flynn’s case once again on Monday, saying, “I believe the president was right to move him out of the White House."
According to CBS News, Mueller’s interviews are not likely to occur over the next couple of weeks. Mueller is also said to be keeping a close eye on Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Trump had previously warned that his family was the red line in the investigation, which he has repeatedly dismissed as a “political witch hunt.”
In a surprisingly bold move last month, Mueller executed a search warrant at the Alexandria, Va., home of Paul J. Manafort, who is Trump’s former campaign chairman.
