US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has rejected the accusation of lying about contacts between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and the Russian government.
Sessions, who was testifying before lawmakers from the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, denied having any information about alleged contacts between Trump’s inner circle and the Russian government’s agents during the 2016 presidential campaign.
“I did not, and I’m not aware of anyone else that did,” Sessions said. “I don’t believe that happened.”
The Attorney General, who was one of the first high-profile supporters of Trump's election campaign, appeared before the Senate committee for a second time.
Democratic members of the Judiciary Committee claim Sessions’ past remarks have been inconsistent with new revelations regarding former presidential campaign aide George Papadopoulos and another campaign advisor.
The new testimony is held after Papadopoulos confirmed to court that he has lied to the FBI about his own foreign contacts.
Sessions' first testimony in June came days after former FBI director James Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Trump had tried to block a probe into ties between Moscow and his former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
Sessions has repeatedly denied discussing election-related issues with Russian officials. “I never had meetings with Russian operatives or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign,” Sessions said in March.
A special counsel as well as several congressional committees are investigating whether the Russian government coordinated with Trump's associates during the 2016 campaign and transition.
