US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes is working with his fellow Republicans in Congress to put together a report that is likely to trigger a probe into “corruption” at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), according to a new report.
The report and its pursuing investigation would focus on the conduct of FBI officials in the course of the investigation into Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, The Washington Post reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Similar efforts are in progress in Senate as well, with Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the Republican who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, complaining that the FBI and the Justice Department have been too slow to stop people peddling “political influence.”
Special Counsel Robert Mueller, a former chief of the bureau, has been running a high-profile investigation into allegations that President Donald Trump won the face-off with his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton only because Moscow had rigged the election in his favor.
The special counsel has so far interviewed many of Trump’s relatives, as well as members of his transition team, under the suspicion that that they had secretly met with Russian officials.
Mueller, a former head of FBI, has recently come under fire from Trump and a handful of powerful Republicans, who think he is looking in the wrong place.
Grassley called for a second special counsel to probe allegations that Clinton had approved a controversial uranium deal with Russia when she was secretary of state. This will put Mueller under pressure since he headed the FBI at the time.
Meanwhile, Trump himself has been more focused on scrutinizing the FBI, questioning the bureau’s handling of the “collusion” case while in comparison with the way it handled a probe into Clinton’s use of a private email server to exchange classified emails.
The Republican president ripped into FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe on the morning of Christmas Eve. McCabe has been a top target of Trump because he worked under former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired in May.
Trump has questioned McCabe’s neutrality by pointing out that his wife accepted campaign donations from a political action committee tied to Hillary and Bill Clinton when she ran for Virginia’s state Senate.
