Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations: Patrick Okpomu Congratulates Botchwey

Nigerian diplomat and statesman Patrick Okpomu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her historic election as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations. 

His message, rich in African solidarity and support for women in leadership, celebrates her achievement as a landmark moment for both the Commonwealth and the broader African continent.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, a distinguished diplomat and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, assumed office on April 1, 2025, following her election at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Apia, Samoa, on October 26, 2024. She is the first Ghanaian and one of the few Africans to hold this prestigious position in the Commonwealth’s 75-year history.

In his congratulatory message, Patrick Okpomu, a staunch advocate for integrity, inclusive governance, and principled leadership, praised Botchwey's selection as a testament to her dedication to democracy, visionary leadership, and unity within the Commonwealth.

"Your election is a clear endorsement of your ability to unify diverse nations, foster democracy, and advance the Commonwealth’s collective goals," Okpomu said.

He also invoked the words of Proverbs 4:8: "Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her," offering blessings for Botchwey’s leadership and calling on her to guide the Commonwealth into a new era of peace, equity, and social progress.

Advocating for Greater Female Representation in Global Governance

Using this occasion, Okpomu championed the cause of women in global diplomacy and leadership. He emphasized that Botchwey’s rise to the position of Secretary-General should inspire broader reforms within the Commonwealth and beyond.

"Any society that fails to harness the full potential of its women is at a significant disadvantage," he remarked. "Vision with action changes the world, and Botchwey’s leadership is a vital step in that direction."

Okpomu further called for the Commonwealth to prioritize initiatives that empower women and girls, stressing the importance of gender equality and the need for constitutional reforms to promote inclusion and justice. He noted that by 2014, 143 countries had enshrined gender equality in their constitutions, urging others to follow suit.

Women’s Role in Diplomacy and Leadership

Highlighting the evolving landscape of global diplomacy, Okpomu emphasized the importance of women's unique qualities—empathy, negotiation skills, and emotional intelligence—especially in peacebuilding and multilateral diplomacy.

“Diplomacy has long been seen as a feminine role, with women contributing essential soft skills and emotional intelligence,” he said. “These attributes are crucial for fostering peace and creating lasting change. Women are negotiators of change in diplomacy.”

He referenced studies showing that countries with higher female representation in government often see stronger institutions, better policies, and more responsive leadership.

A Legacy of Leadership Rooted in Human Rights

Okpomu also reaffirmed the significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), recalling the pivotal role women played in its creation. He described the UDHR as a foundational document for humanity’s shared pursuit of dignity and equality, underscoring how women were central to shaping its vision.

Nigeria’s Commitment to Global Leadership

In addition to his congratulations, Okpomu revealed that he had recently served as a Guest Speaker at the 11th African Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI) International Conference held in Abuja from October 21 to 24, 2024. The ABLI aims to cultivate principled leadership across Africa and the world. Okpomu connected the ABLI’s objectives with the Commonwealth’s renewed vision under Botchwey’s leadership.

Okpomu also announced his nomination as an International Delegate to the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and Civil Society Organizations Summit in 2026, where he will engage with global leaders on pressing issues and support Botchwey’s initiatives.
