The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier this month in London.
The announcement was made on Monday, July 14, by Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The holiday forms part of a week-long period of national mourning which commenced on Sunday, July 13.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the decision is meant to pay tribute to the late statesman’s “dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to national development.”
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with distinction, prioritising unity, discipline, and progress. This public holiday is a moment for citizens to reflect on his legacy and the values he embodied,” the Minister said.
He also encouraged Nigerians to observe the day by promoting peace, patriotism, and unity virtues Buhari consistently championed during his tenure.
Buhari’s legacy and leadership remembered
Buhari’s political journey was marked by his role as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a two-term democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His administration focused heavily on combating corruption and insurgency, though his policies remained a subject of national debate.
His death has sparked an outpouring of condolences and national reflection, with tributes coming in from local and international dignitaries.
National flags at half-mast, funeral underway
As part of the mourning period, national flags are to remain at half-mast across the country until the end of the week. Buhari’s body is expected to arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday, July 15, for burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in line with Islamic rites.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, also extended the Federal Government’s condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large.
