Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, was on Monday questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with alleged cash withdrawals running into N189 billion.
Tambuwal, who led the state between 2015 and 2023, arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja at about 11:30 a.m. before being ushered in for an interview with investigators.
An official of the commission, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the transactions under probe were suspected to have breached provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The source said, “Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, is being held over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals to the tune of N189billion.
“The withdrawals are in flagrant violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022. The governor arrived at the EFCC’s Headquarters around 11:30 am and faced interrogators on the alleged financial crime.”
Another senior EFCC official, who also declined to be named, confirmed that the former governor was in custody at the commission’s Abuja office.
“He is in custody at our Abuja corporate headquarters. The investigation is ongoing,” the official said.
Efforts to get comments from the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful as he declined to speak on the matter.
