Ondo Kingdom’s historic Ogun Festival, a cultural celebration held annually between late August and early September, could become a multi-billion naira opportunity for the state, according to Dr. Femi Akinkuebi, leader of the Itesiwaju Movement.
Speaking on the festival, Dr. Akinkuebi noted that while the two-day event has long been a source of pride and identity, showcasing traditional rites, cultural displays, and festivities, its economic potential remains largely untapped. In recent years, the festival has expanded to include music, youth engagement, and social activities, yet structured management and promotion have been lacking.
“The Ogun Festival is not just a celebration of our heritage,” Dr. Akinkuebi said. “With proper branding, strategic planning, and investment, it can drive tourism, local business growth, and employment, generating substantial economic benefits for Ondo Kingdom.”
Dr. Akinkuebi called on the Ondo Development Committee, in collaboration with the Ondo State Government and the Ministry of Culture, to establish a permanent Ogun Carnival planning committee. He suggested that the committee should include community leaders, youth representatives, cultural custodians, and professionals, and that the festival should have a registered trademark, logo, and official brand identity to enhance recognition and appeal.
He also highlighted the importance of engaging corporate sponsors and government agencies to secure funding and structured support. According to Dr. Akinkuebi, a year-round plan linking the festival to tourism, hospitality, security, and local enterprise would ensure lasting benefits for the community.
Central to this vision is youth empowerment. “Ondo youths bring energy, creativity, and innovation. By working alongside our elders, we can preserve the authenticity of the festival while embracing modern approaches that attract investment and visitors,” he said.
Dr. Akinkuebi concluded by emphasising that the Ogun Carnival should not only celebrate cultural heritage but also create sustainable value for generations to come. The Itesiwaju Movement stands ready to lead and mobilise the community in rebranding and re-energising the festival.
“Itesiwaju Ondo lo je wa logun. Power for Progress,” he added.
