Young Delta lawyer mediates high-profile rights case against Sanwo-Olu

In what many observers have described as a defining moment in the intersection of law, governance, and civic advocacy, prominent Ika-born lawyer and political strategist, Barrister Desmond Orisewezie, hailing from Umunede in Ika North-East LGA of Delta State, was received in audience by the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Lagos State House, Marina, on Friday, September 12, 2025.

The high-level meeting, held at the direct invitation of the Governor, centered on a landmark fundamental rights suit before the Federal High Court, where Governor Sanwo-Olu was sued for allegedly breaching the rights of Barrister Festus Ogun, a respected human rights lawyer, who had been blocked from the Governor’s social media handle since 2020 over his consistent critique of executive policies.

The case has generated widespread national debate about freedom of expression, political accountability, and digital access to official government communication. Observers note that Orisewezie’s pivotal role as mediator has not only helped open direct lines of engagement with the Governor but has also elevated his profile as one of the few young voices capable of brokering peace at the highest levels of government.

As National Coordinator of the Red Cap Movement of Nigeria, an emerging socio-political force with influence across Nigeria’s youth and civic circles, Orisewezie underscored his client’s simple demand: to be unblocked from the Governor’s media handle and thereby restored to equal civic access. His diplomatic approach was met with respect, as the Governor immediately directed his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, to implement the condition for amicable settlement.

In an extraordinary gesture of goodwill, Governor Sanwo-Olu further invited Orisewezie and Ogun to join him at a State House event hosting the prestigious University of Cambridge Alumni Association, with participants drawn from across the globe. There, before an international audience of thought leaders, the Governor not only showcased the developmental strides of his administration but also publicly announced the amicable resolution of the rights dispute an outcome widely credited to Orisewezie’s mediation.

Following the event, Orisewezie held further private discussions with the Governor, during which both men reflected on their first meeting in September 2019, shortly after Sanwo-Olu’s inauguration, when Orisewezie served as President of the NYSC Community Development Service group. The Governor went on to personally introduce Orisewezie to several of his senior aides, a gesture seen by political watchers as a signal of respect and recognition for the young lawyer’s rising influence.

In a formal statement on Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary confirmed the settlement, which the resulting effect will be that Orisewezie and Ogun would now be expected to withdraw the lawsuit from the Federal High Court, Ikoyi.

With this intervention, Desmond Orisewezie has further cemented his reputation as a bridge-builder between government and the governed, and a rising figure whose influence is increasingly being felt not only in legal and civic advocacy circles but also at the highest levels of political leadership.
