The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa the winner of the Ondo State governorship election, following a landmark victory on Saturday.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), made history by securing victories in all 18 local government areas of the state—a first for Ondo. He defeated his closest contender, Mr. Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with a decisive 366,781 votes against Ajayi’s 117,845 votes. This vote tally marks the highest ever recorded by a candidate in any gubernatorial election in Ondo State.
Speaking to the press at the Government House in Akure, an elated Governor Aiyedatiwa hailed the victory as a collective triumph for democracy and the people of Ondo State.
"This win is not mine alone; it belongs to every citizen of Ondo State," Aiyedatiwa declared. "I am deeply humbled by the overwhelming support and trust you have shown. This mandate is yours, and I am committed to serving you with dedication and integrity."
The Governor-elect pledged to lead an inclusive government that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens and focuses on economic growth, development, and unity.
"I accept the results of the 2024 gubernatorial election with immense gratitude. As your Governor, I promise to continue running a government that listens to every voice and fosters progress for all. Together, we will build a brighter future for our state," he stated.
Accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, Aiyedatiwa commended INEC for organizing a transparent and credible election. He also appreciated the professionalism displayed by security agencies, which ensured a peaceful electoral process.
"I must commend INEC for conducting a free and fair election. I also thank our security agencies for their professionalism and for maintaining peace throughout the process," Aiyedatiwa said.
He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership, as well as to APC National Chairman Dr. Umar Ganduje and the National Campaign Council led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State.
"I thank President Tinubu for his exemplary leadership and support, as well as the APC National Chairman and our Campaign Council for their tireless efforts. To the party leaders, members, my family, and all supporters, this victory is a result of your dedication and hard work," Aiyedatiwa added.
The Governor extended an olive branch to the opposition, calling on all parties to join hands in advancing the development of Ondo State.
Governor Aiyedatiwa dedicated his victory to God and to the late Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, whose legacy continues to inspire the state.
Looking ahead, APC National Chairman Dr. Umar Ganduje expressed optimism about the party's future, signaling plans to reclaim Osun and Oyo States from the PDP.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the people of Ondo State for their peaceful conduct, describing the election as a model for other states.
In addition to Sanwo-Olu, the event in Akure was attended by ten other APC governors, including Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq (Kwara), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Babagana Zulum (Borno), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Bassey Otu (Cross River), and Hope Uzodinma (Imo).
